Paella challenge - team building
For the Paella challenge, the clients are divided into teams and explained their task. In the form of a treasure hunt activity, the teams will be given a list of ingredients which they then have to buy within a set time limit. The list of objects will be given in English but of course they will have to use their communication skills in order to make the correct purchases. This part of the activity will take place in the famous Boqueria market where the knowledge of English is limited. Once two hours have elapsed, the teams will return to base where they will be awarded points for the quality of their purchases.
For the second part of the activity, the teams are transferred to a private country house where they have to make a paella within a set time limit and with the ingredients they bought previously. The instructions on how to make the paella can be given in English or, the more challenging option, in Spanish (with a dictionary for each team to help with translation.).
Once completed, the paellas are judged and marked by an expert on the following criteria: Organisation, presentation and of course taste. There will be prizes for the winning teams and a booby prize for the last placed team.
Once the whole activity has finished the paellas are eaten by the contestants in a more informal atmosphere where the groups can mix and socialise over a glass of wine.
To finish, the event's manager will give some general feedback on the day and present the prizes.
The objective is to produce one of Spain's most popular dishes in a competitive environment. This is an entertaining activity which is also dynamic and competitive at the same time. The aim of the task is to get groups working together as a team and overcoming linguistic and communicative hurdles along the way.
